Nivia Zavala Special Art Contest
for ELLs/Bilingual Learners with Disabilities
The contest is limited to ELL/bilingual learners with a disability currently enrolled in bilingual and ENL programs in New York State.
Each entry must be accompanied by an application form.
Topic: Success through Bilingualism and Biliteracy
-Possible themes: How learning two languages benefits me at school, at home, and in my future work. How I can help others because I speak two languages. Why bilingualism is important in making the world a better place.
Teachers should assist students to ensure that artwork submissions meet the following criteria:
Artwork must be submitted on paper no larger than 11” x 14”.
Students may use any medium (crayons, paint, pencils, etc.). Photographs will not be accepted.
Artwork will not be returned. Accepted artwork may be featured in the NYSABE Conference program.
Only work done by individual students will be accepted. No group entries will be considered.
Winning entries may be published in NYSABE’s The Bilingual Times Newsletter. First place winners at each of the following grade clusters will be chosen: 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12.
1st PLACE WINNER: medal and gift of $50
Winners will be notified by April 16, 2016. The awards will be presented on Saturday, May 21, 2016 during the Award Luncheon at the NYSABE 39th Annual Conference, in New York City at the New York University Kimmel Center for Regions I, II, and III; and in Western NY at Niagara University for Regions IV, V, and VI.
JUDGING: Once the submissions are received, a committee of judges, selected by the Committee Chairperson, will review the art based on the outlined criteria. This committee will determine the 1st place winners in each grade cluster. The committee’s decisions are final. Winners will be notified no later than
April 16, 2016.
